Grades Five to Eight

1. Sing alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
1.1 Demonstrate knowledge of vocal repertoire by performing moderately difficult melodies on correct pitches with accurate rhythm.
1.2 Demonstrate ability to sing and understand two-part harmony.
1.3 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of partner songs.

2. Perform instruments alone and with others, a varied repertoire of songs.

3. Improvise melodies, variations, and accompaniments.

3.1 Improvise short and simple melodies in certain sections of pieces when called for to enhance style.

4. Compose and arrange.

5. Read and notate music.
5.1 Identify direction of notated pitches.
5.2 Identify the difference between skips and steps in a melody.
5.3 Identify duration of notes and rests.

6. Listen to, analyze, and evaluate music.
6.1 Listen to recordings or teacher to understand pitches and rhythms of pieces being performed.
6.2 Listen and identify the relationship of two-part harmony and polyphony of piece being performed.
6.3 Listen and evaluate the difficulty of works in order to perform them.

7. Evaluate music and musical performances.
7.1 Constructively report likes and dislikes of live and recorded performances.
7.2 Point out positives and negatives in pitch, rhythm, and language.

8. Understand relationship between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside of the arts.
8.1 Demonstrate knowledge of how works they perform are related to poems, plays, stories, ballets, operas, etc.
8.2 Create simple movements that relate to the style and time period of the pieces being performed.
8.3 Demonstrate knowledge and ability to express emotions associated with works as they are performing.

9. Understand music in relation to history and culture.
9.1 Demonstrate knowledge of characteristics of works based on time periods and composers.
9.2 Demonstrate vocal styles associated with time periods, styles, and composers.
9.3 Demonstrate knowledge of simple biographical and stylistic elements of composers and works performed.

Grades Nine to Twelve

1. Sing alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
1.1 Demonstrate knowledge of vocal repertoire by performing somewhat advanced melodies on correct pitches with accurate rhythms.
1.2 Demonstrate ability to understand and perform in three-part harmony.
1.3 Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to perform partner songs.

2. Perform instruments, alone and with others.

3. Improvise melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
3.1 Improvise intermediate level solos where indicated to enhance style of pieces being performed.
3.2 Improvise in "scat" style when singing jazz works.

4. Compose and arrange.

5. Read and notate music.
5.1 Identify names and direction of pitches in works performed.
5.2 Sing correctly on pitches while reading.
5.3 Performing correct rhythms with correct duration of notes and rests.

6. Listen to, analyze, and evaluate music.
6.1 Listen to teacher or recording to understand pitches and rhythms of the performance pieces.
6.2 Listen and understand the relationship of harmony and polyphony.
6.3 Evaluate difficulty of work in order to perform it, and make changes if necessary.

7. Evaluate music and musical performances.
7.1 Constructively report likes and dislikes of live and recorded performances.
7.2 Point out positives and negatives in pitch, rhythm, and languages in performances.
