Early Childhood Weekly Letter Aug 30 2010

Our New CDS Early Childhood Coordinator
Dear CDS Community,

We are pleased to announce the appointment of our new Country Day School Early Childhood Coordinator, Mrs. Anabelle Jervis, beginning in August, 2010. Through dialogueswith Dr. Gloria Doll, the Trustees, and elementary personnel, I am pleased that our process of reviewing applicants led us to a school leader in our own community.

Anabelle Jervis has been a dedicated educator in our Early Childhood Program for 22 years. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Preschool Education from Universidad Magister in San José and over her tenure has supervised student‐teachers in our EC program as part of CDS's tradition of continuing teacher education. With experience in our pre‐kinder, kindergarten and prep programs, Anabelle believes strongly in the child's growth through these formative years. Dedicated to professional development, Anabelle has constantly created and re‐visited thematic units, attended workshops on effective reading strategies, and thoroughly investigated and implemented appropriate technology use in the classroom. Anabelle looks forward to continuing the CDS partnership with Project Abraham, a partnership started by Katy DesChenes and the Early Childhood teachers last year, and is an advocate for the advancement of Responsive Classroom.

She sees relationships with all community members as paramount to the success of the Early Childhood program. Anabelle gives freely of her time, focused on not only the children in the program, but seeing the partnership with families as essential to the overall growth of the children. Colleagues and families describe Anabelle as someone who 'involves them with a creative and opportunistic spark'.

As a proud mother of two boys at CDS, Anabelle is grounded in this community. Sebastián and Andrés Carvajal. Sebastián entered the ELC when he was 10 months old and now he is going to 4th grade; Andrés started in the ELC when he was one year old and now he is going to 1st grade. She speaks with true passion for continuing the strong traditions of CDS. Her goal will be to continue the recent growth of the Early Childhood program under the past leadership of Katy Deschenes and will work closely with Bill Large, our Elementary School principal and Diane Wakefield, lead teacher in our Early Learning Center, to provide the care and support for our youngest learners at CDS. Mrs. Jervis's devotion to young people, years of experience with colleagues and families of Country Day School and high
energy and passion for this community will make its mark this year. Please join me in welcoming Anabelle to her new position.

Sincerely,
Greg L. MacGilpin Jr., Director
The Country Day School

Welcome Back to Early Childhood
Dear families,

Monday, August. 16, is the first day of the 2010-2011 school year, a very important day for principals, teachers, children, and parents. Welcome to a new school year! I am honored to be the new Early Childhood Coordinator. I am looking forward to reconnecting with returning children and their families, and I am also eager to get to know all of our new children and their families better.

The teachers and assistants have worked hard this past week getting their rooms ready. Our early childhood team here at CDS is stronger than ever, and all of us want to work together with you to make this year a wonderful year for your child. You will receive specific program information soon.

I want to give you some information for the first day.

1. Leaving Your Child on the First Day

It is customary for parents to accompany their child/ children on the first day of school. We are happy to have you come to school with your child. Your child will be very excited to show you his/her new classroom. While there, be sure your child’s teacher has your current e-mail address and telephone number. It is important for you to tell you child when you’re leaving and to tell him/her when you’ll be back. Our teachers are very experienced, and please know that we will take wonderful care of your child. We appreciate your help.

2. Pick-ups: Be sure your child’s teacher knows how your child is leaving school.

A. ELC Children
These children should be picked up and dropped off at the ELC.

B. Pre-kdg. and Kdg. noon pick-up
The pre-kdg. and kdg. children who leave at noon all leave from the same gate. Parents drive up to this gate. It makes the pick-up faster for everyone if parents stay in their cars while we take the children to you.

C. 3:00 Dismissals:
In addition to bus transportation, there are two pick-up gates. One, the upper gate, is the drive- through gate, and the other gate, the lower gate, is where parents park in the lot across the street and then walk over to meet their child in front of the office. If you are coming to the drive- through gate, please stay in your car, and we will deliver your child/children. We try to get the children in the cars as quickly as possible.

CHANGE OF TRANSPORTATION

If parents wish to change their child's usual method of transportation home, they must send a note in writing or an e-mail to Sylvia Espinach ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ), one of our secretaries, by 10:00 a.m. She will send a return e-mail confirming the receipt of your request. For all children’s safety, changes of transportation may not be made through a phone call.

Looking forward to a great school year,

Anabelle Jervis
Early Childhood Coordinator
