First Grade
The first grade language arts program is part of our whole-language literature-based reading program and is designed to give students tools by which they can effectively communicate feelings, ideas, and information both orally and in writing and listening.
Language skills and various literary forms are used to augment the student's understanding of science, social studies, and other content areas in a closely integrated curricular approach. Dictionary skills are introduced, as well as grammatical concepts including parts of speech and sentence parts; poetry and creative writing.
The first grade reading program is designed to teach decoding skills that include short and long vowel sounds, consonant blends and vowel digraphs. Through the use of oral and silent reading, the following comprehension skills are emphasized: main idea, sequence of events, distinguishing between fact and fiction, drawing conclusions, and recalling facts, identifying genres.
The first grade spelling program is developmental in sequence and fully integrated with the reading program. The spelling program promotes phonemic awareness and provides for the transfer of the spelling list words into the children's daily written work.
The first grade math program gives children the opportunity to explore many mathematical relationships using a wide variety of concrete objects prior to moving on to representational, and finally, abstract concepts. The program is designed to develop mastery of addition and subtraction facts to two digits as well as skills in problem solving, mental math, estimation, and logic.
The first grade science program is designed to focus on the interdependence of humans, animals, and their environment. The science program explores health science, physical science, life science, and earth science. The program is closely integrated with the language arts program. The students also participate in a science fair.
The first grade social studies program is designed to help children develop a sense of themselves in relation to basic human needs and cultural similarities and differences. The course includes lessons in human interrelationships, citizenship, Native Americans and Pilgrims, Johnny Appleseed, Columbus, holidays around the world, and geography. This program is mutli-cultural in nature, and utilizes the international population of the school as a major resource. There is a great deal of integration with the elementary school's character education (life skills) program.
All first grade programs are taught using a combination of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic approaches, recognizing a wide variety of learning styles. Classroom climate is designed to stimulate the multiple intelligences of the students. The character education program in particular is tailored to develop the emotional intelligence of each child.
Second Grade
The second grade program is a phenomenal year of growth and discovery. In second grade we don’t just cover subjects; we uncover them, and follow the children’s creative and imaginative leads to master concepts and skills.
The second grade math program allows the children to incorporate the skills they learn into everyday activities. Children learn to estimate, add, subtract, regroup, tell time, count money, graph information, find fractions, identify geometric shapes, and understand measurement.
The science program retraces the steps of the dinosaurs until the very beginning of planet Earth, and ends with a rainforest unit culminating in a classroom Rain Forest Café. In between, the children learn to do experiments following the scientific method and discuss whether cloning a woolly mammoth would be a good idea. In each science unit of discovery the children become professors and teach the class in either a written or oral report prepared entirely in the classroom.
In Social Studies children learn to navigate a map of the Earth, develop a great understanding of countries and cultures, and become a famous person in a Living Museum made up of over 80 famous people and their contribution to science, art, medicine, literature, geography, and other areas.
Writing and reading are incorporated into every aspect of the second grade curriculum. Children develop character and voice in creative writing, confidence in preparing research papers, and skill in writing letters, persuasive paragraphs, descriptions, and opinion papers.
Second grade is a fabulous place to learn new ideas, responsibilities, cursive, comprehension strategies, advanced math concepts, how to work in a team, and how fascinating it is to be a part of the world in this millennium.
Third Grade
The third grade math course integrates problem solving, math reasoning, communication, subject integration, strand integration, group work, and use of manipulatives in the topics described as follows: place value, addition and subtraction up to four digit numbers, time and money, multiplication trading ones, division up to two digit quotients, fractions and decimals, geometry, data, graphs and probability, customary and metric measurement.
The reading course in third grade will develop skills essential for understanding reading material through lessons in comprehension, vocabulary, and language skills. Moreover, study skills, literary, and communication skills will be emphasized to provide students with strong foundations.
The language curriculum in the third grade is designed to introduce students to the formal aspects of written expression and sentence analysis. Students begin the course by recognizing types of sentences. Then, they move to recognizing topic sentences in a paragraph, and lastly, sentence order in a paragraph and correct paragraph formation. Formal usage and recognition of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns is also covered. Specific study skills are presented as related to reference materials, parts of a textbook, and use of the library.
The spelling curriculum in the third grade presents 24 phonics patterns, structural and dictionary skills, and also introduces vocabulary to be applied in meaningful contexts. Students are also introduced to word-origins and word histories, spelling activities related to themes and concepts, and motivating games for a variety of practice and writing applications that encourage response to literature.
The yearly science course covers physical science extensively. It is divided into four units including life cycles, habitats, human body, and the solar system. The students also participate in a science fair.
The social studies course begins by providing active learning experiences where the student discovers maps, understands the imaginary line system of longitude and latitude lines, time lines, charts and graphs.
Students will also acquire and develop a broad understanding of the concept of community. The student will know why communities are formed as well as determine what are the necessary elements that foster economic, social, emotional and environmental growth. The students also participate in an African fair after a study of various countries in Africa.
Fourth Grade
The math curriculum in the fourth grade is designed to reinforce the four basic arithmetic operations to solve computational and word problems. Students will learn to add and subtract like and unlike fractions. Different methods of estimating are learned. Various types of graphs, (picto-, line, bar, and pie) will be presented. Customary and metric measurement will also be covered.
The reading curriculum in the fourth grade is designed to provide the students with a well-balanced mixture of fiction, informational articles, and poetry. The students will learn to recognize and appreciate various elements of literature through these selections. Their vocabulary will be enriched through the study of words found in the selections. They will use punctuation, roots, and grammatical patterns as clues to extract the meaning from reading materials, locate information quickly, read for specific details. identify the main idea of a selection, note the correct sequence of events, understand figures of speech, outline, and use references materials.
The grammar program presents a thorough approach to English grammar and usage. The student will be able to identify and use correctly four parts of speech.
The writing curriculum in fourth grade is designed to guide the students step by step through specific writing assignments, from getting an idea to the finished composition.
Writing skills will be developed in the areas of correct spelling, sentence formation, punctuation, and paragraph composition. After researching a specific topic or reading an assigned book, the student will present written and oral reports.
Specific study skills are developed including the use of reference materials, the library, and the parts of a textbook.
The spelling curriculum in fourth grade is designed to reinforce spelling skills in the areas of phonics, word structure, word meaning, mechanics and dictionary usage.
The science curriculum in fourth grade is designed to give students some basic knowledge and understanding about various topics, to encourage students to use thinking skills, and to stimulate curiosity about science. Activities in the program also develop such skills as classifying, critical thinking, recognizing cause and effect, labeling, sequencing, and note taking.
After studying four regions of the United States, students will be able to discuss the following factors which influence people's lives: climate, natural resources, land forms, and history. These factors will be compared to those of similar regions throughout the world.
Fifth Grade
The fifth grade math program integrates practices leading to proficiency in basic facts, mental math, and problem solving.
The reading curriculum in fifth grade is designed to expose the students to a well-balanced mixture of selected fiction, informational articles, and poetry. The students will learn to recognize and appreciate various elements of literature through these selections. Their vocabulary will be enriched through the study of words found in the selections. The program also includes the following: using punctuation and grammatical patterns to extract the meaning from reading material, locating information quickly, reading for specific details, getting the main idea of a selection, noting the correct sequence of events, understanding figures of speech, outlining, and using reference materials.
The grammar program presents a thorough and rigorous approach to grammar and usage. The student learns to identify and correctly use the parts of speech in writing and speaking.
The spelling curriculum in fifth grade is designed to reinforce spelling skills in the areas of phonics, word structure, word meaning, mechanics, and dictionary usage.
The science program covers the major areas of science. The scientific method is emphasized through class discussions and individual and group experimentation.
The fifth grade social studies program concentrates on the history of Latin America from ancient civilizations to current times. Research assignments, map and study skills, and creative projects are integrated. |
