IMG_5243.JPGThe Country Day School has been the Brown family’s passion and legacy for more than 40 years. My parents, Woodson Churchill Brown and Sonya Vargas Brown, assumed responsibility for the school in 1971 when it still operated out of a house in Barrio Amón and served the small but growing US and international community in San Jose.

Through diligent effort, and the commitment of dedicated teachers and administrators, the small school produced impressive results. Seniors regularly placed in the top 2% of College Boards or SAT’s. We had National Merit Finalists and students earned admittance and scholarships to top universities, just as they do today.

Over the next 45 years, the school continued to improve its reputation for academic excellence, and for being a leader in education. After several moves, the school now occupies a recently completed 5-hectare, LEED certified, state of the art campus in San Rafael de Alajuela. We serve over 800 students from 34 nationalities in a nurturing, student centered program from pre-school – 12th grade.

As a Board, we have one guiding principle and three simple, yet profoundly meaningful responsibilities. Our guiding principal is always to hold the mission of the school as paramount. Answering any question always starts with asking if and how it is aligned with our mission and beliefs, which always put students first. Our three responsibilities are 1) to define the more important school policies and develop or approve the strategic plan, 2) to hire ,and hold accountable, the Board’s sole employee, the School Director, to execute the Board’s plans and otherwise run the School according to policies and 3) to approve the school’s annual operating budget.

Country Day School today stands at the beginning of an even brighter future. With a campus that now matches our historical quality of teaching and love of learning, we are poised to welcome new generations of students for years to come. It is with great humility, sense of responsibility and joy that we embrace the opportunity to make the world a better place by educating the leaders of tomorrow.

We have a new home, but our values and our history are rich and have already filled our campus with purpose and vision. I invite you to explore our school and our community further and hope you will join our growing family.

Sincerely,

Patrick Brown
