Last year CDS initiated a broad search for a new Director to start the 2017 school year. Our search drew well over one hundred applicants from around the world and led us to invite 5 outstanding finalists to on-site visits, meeting with faculty, parent, leadership and student groups. After reviewing feedback and recommendations from our advisory groups, I am very pleased and excited to announce that the Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Scott Adams CDS Director effective July 1, 2017.
Scott brings over 27 years of educational experience at excellent schools in the United States and abroad. He has taught or led at all levels of PK-12 education, including High School English teacher and English Dept chair, as a K-8 Administrator, and most recently as Middle School Principal at the American School in Japan.
Scott has a Bachelor of Arts from San Diego State University with a major in English and minors in Spanish and Linguistics. He holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of California at Berkeley and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction.
Scott brings an incredibly balanced wealth of qualities that will serve our school well. He possesses extensive training and experience in curriculum development and articulation across PK-12, which will help us continue important initiatives already in place. He has successful experience in developing and executing long-range strategic plans, including most recently several innovative technology initiatives. Scotthas served on and led multiple accreditations. He also has experience in marketing and branding, which will help us grow and improve CDS.
Scott and his wife, Vera, have lived in Japan, England, Hawaii, North Carolina, California and Cyprus during their professional careers. Vera, also an educator, is a highly accomplished teacher in the K-8 levels and will also be joining CDS professionally as a grade level teacher. Scott and Vera have two older sons - one a graduate of MIT currently working as a mechanical engineer in Boston and the other a junior at Columbia University - and a daughter, Phoebe, who is currently a seventh grader and will be joining CDS as a student.
During his visit, Scott displayed an amazing depth of knowledge about our school, community, and our journey, as well as a contagious enthusiasm for his desire to be the next leader of our school. He will continue the many conversations started during his visit with Mr. Trent and members of our leadership team this year as he prepares for his upcoming tenure.
Scott and Vera will be visiting us again in the second semester to further acquaint themselves with our school and community and to start putting things in place for their move here over the following summer.
I want to thank our leadership, faculty, parent, and student advisory groups, as well as all those who participated in our extensive search process. Our selection and CDS are better for it.
Please take a moment to read Scott’s acceptance letter and join me in welcoming Scott and his family to CDS and Costa Rica!
President of the Board
